4R Nutrient Stewardship offers a framework for understanding how nutrients behave in the environment and how fertilizers can be managed to optimize their use in agriculture. The Amazing Rain and Snow Show connects these concepts by simulating the fate of water, and what’s in it, at the scale of small-group learning. Come learn….and no need to bring an umbrella.

About 4R Nutrient Stewardship

4R Nutrient Stewardship is an internationally recognized program that advocates for responsible and effective management of nutrient resources. The 4R Principles are described by Fertilizer Canada as:

  • Right Source: Select the correct source of nutrient for your soil with a balanced supply of essential  nutrients.
  • Right Rate: Consider the availability of nutrients from all sources (such as manure, fertilizers and atmospheric nitrogen). Perform annual soil testing and apply nutrients with consideration of  nutrients already in the soil.
  • Right Time: Carry out nutrient management planning on an annual basis to assess conditions and make good decisions such as avoiding fertilizer or manure application on snow or frozen soils.
  • Right Place: Respect recommended setback distances for nutrient application near waterways. Place nutrients below the soil surface where they can be taken up by growing roots when needed.
